It was no secret during the last campaigns Stephen Sang was a narcissist and a demagogue who resorted to dishonesty in appealing for the Nandi votes.
The election of Senator Sang has not only been a catastrophe but it has been disastrous.
For a man who has been implicated in ‘fixing’ Deputy President William Ruto at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in connection to crimes against humanity stemming from the 2007/ 2008 Post-election violence, Mr Sang’s political future now lies in the balance.
Sang continues to receive massive backlash from residents of Nandi who were not prepared for the magnitude of this train wreck.
The residents clung to a slim hope that the youthful senator would turn out to be all noise and bluster.
Instead, some four years in — and with about 130 days to go before his term is completed — it is increasingly clear that those hopes were misplaced.
Senator Sang is among aspirants seeking to unseat Governor Cleophas Lagat as the gubernatorial race takes shape.
Already, opinion polls have put former long serving Tinderet MP Henry Kosgey ahead.
“It is impossible to know where his (Sang’) governorship will lead or how much damage he will do to our county,” said Mr John Sawe from Mosop.
According to Nandi elders, the recent developments that Mr Sang was behind DP Ruto’s woos at the Hague based court are immensely dangerous which threaten to weaken the county’s moral standing.
The elders have asked the senator to undergo a vigorous cleansing exercise before he vies for any political seat.
What is most worrisome about Sang is Sang himself. He is a man so unpredictable, so reckless, so petulant, and so full of blind self-regard, so untethered to reality that it is impossible to know where his governorship will lead or how much damage he will do to our county.
His obsession with his own fame, ego and success, his determination to vanquish enemies real and imagined, his craving for adulation — these traits were, of course, at the very heart of his scorched-earth outsider campaign; indeed, some of them helped get him elected. But in a real senatorial in which he wields unimaginable power, they are nothing short of disastrous.
In the recent days, just before the political party primaries set for later this month, social media has been awash with anti-Sang posts and comments.
Most online users have termed him a traitor who should take a political ringside seat and apologise to the entire Kalenjin community for fixing its political kingpin to the ICC.
In 2015, an ICC witness Philip Koech while testifying before the ICC claimed that Mr Sang was among those who linked him to donor agencies.
Amid this, former cabinet minister Henry Kosgey continues to enjoy massive support from his backyard.
He has proved himself a force reckon reflecting the warm reception he has been receiving while on the campaign trail.
Here are some of the moments that justify that Henry Kosgey is the next Governor of Nandi County. A honest leader with vast experience in matters of governance and devolution.
